ORLANDO – No. 11 Gonzaga (6-0) held off No. 21 Iowa State (5-1) in the closing seconds, as Monte' Morris' 3-pointer at the buzzer rattled off to give the Bulldogs a 73-71 victory and the 2016 Advocare Invitational championship.
Iowa State staged a furious second-half rally, coming back from an 18-point second half deficit behind Deonte Burton's 21 second-half points. He finished the game with a career-high 29 points. The Cyclones had multiple opportunities to take the lead down the stretch, but failed to score in the final three minutes of the contest.
How it Happened
The pace of this game was frenetic right from the opening tip, as both teams came out firing. Gonzaga made 9-of-10 from the field, including 5-of-6 from beyond the arc, to take an early 23-18 lead with 14:07 remaining in the first half.
The Cyclones stayed in the game, however, with seniors Deonte Burton and Nazareth Mitrou-Long tallying 14 points combined.
Iowa State then went cold, and the Bulldogs took advantage by increasing their lead to 39-24 with 5:22 left in the first half. Gonzaga went into the break with a 49-34 lead by scorching the nets for a 64.5 percent clip, including 66.7 percent from downtown (8-12 3FG). Mitrou-Long had 16 first-half points for the Cyclones.
Things looked bleak for the Cyclones when the Bulldogs took an 18-point lead (58-40) early in the second half. However, ISU responded with an impressive 15-0 run to cut the gap to 58-55 with 13:06 remaining in the game. Burton had 11 of ISU's 15 points in the run.
ISU trimmed the lead to just a point at 70-69 with 4:14 left when Burton hit a trey followed by a drive from Morris. Merrill Holden scored a putback to make it 72-71 Gonzaga with just over three minutes remaining, but the Cyclones couldn't get a basket the rest of the way to allow the Bulldogs to escape.
