AMES, Iowa- The Cyclone gymnastics team took over Hilton Coliseum for the first time this season to hold their annual intrasquad meet Thursday. With five freshmen on the squad, the lineups saw a few new faces along with multiple veterans. A new mentality for 2017 helped the Cyclones as they practiced for the first time this fall in a meet-like setting.
Several gymnasts stood out at the intrasquad, giving fans an idea who to look out for in the coming season. The practice also gave the coaches a look into the strengths and weakness of the team as a whole.
"It went about the way we expected it to," said head coach Jay Ronayne. "It's still early so we're still spotting some landings. There were some things that surprised me a little bit. There were a few mistakes on bars that were unexpected, because they've been really solid in the gym. But that's why we're in this building, it changes the way you think since it's more like a meet. I told the team that this is why we're in here today, to get all of those mistakes and the nerves out of the way now."
The freshmen gymnasts got their first taste of Hilton Magic at the meet, helping prepare them for the upcoming season.
"I've come been coming to the meets here for the past three years," explained freshman Laura Burns. "Nothing compares to the feeling of actually being here and coming on the floor and hearing your music for the first time. Getting to experience this with my teammates was a lot of fun."
The Cyclones will be back in Hilton Coliseum in 2017 for their first official meet against Arizona State. The meet will take place on Friday, Jan. 6 and will made even more interesting with the addition of a wrestling meet between Iowa State and Arizona State, one of two Beauty and the Beast events to be hosted by the Cyclones this year.
