AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State women's basketball team (13-16 overall, 5-13 Big 12) fell in its regular season finale to West Virginia (23-8, 12-6) by a score of 82-57. Tuesday's game was also senior night at Hilton Coliseum, as Cyclone seniors Madison Baier and Nicole Blaskowsky were honored for their careers in the Cardinal and Gold.
How it Happened
The Cyclones couldn't get anything to fall on the offensive end in the early going, missing their first nine shot attempts from the field. Iowa State found itself in a 12-0 hole before Bridget Carleton rattled home a 3-pointer for the first ISU points of the game with 3:52 to play in the opening quarter. Junior Seanna Johnson would lead the team with five points in the period, and the Cyclones trailed 20-8 after 10 minutes of action.
West Virginia's long range shooting was the story of the second quarter. After opening up a 29-10 with 6:52 to play in the half, Iowa State started chipping away at the Mountaineer advantage. The Cyclones would twice whittle the deficit down to single digits on jumpers from seniors Madison Baier and Nicole Blaskowsky, and on each occasion, WVU immediately responded with a 3-pointer on the other end. In total, the Mountaineers were 9-of-16 from 3-point range in the first half, taking a 42-27 lead into the locker room.
The second half was more of the same, as the Cyclones hung tough but were unable to put a dent in the WVU lead. Despite a continued strong performance from Johnson, Iowa State was out-scored 24-19 in the third quarter and trailed 66-46 after 30 minutes of action.
Iowa State held West Virginia to16 points in the fourth quarter, but would fall 82-57 to close out the regular season. All totaled, Johnson would go for game-highs of 21 points and 14 rebounds on the night while shooting 8-of-13 from the field.
