BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – The Iowa State track and field team wrapped up day one of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships with a trio of second-team All-Americans. Friday competition at the Birmingham CrossPlex saw Daniel Everett take 10th in the men's 5,000-meter run, and Kate Hall (12th place) and Jhoanmy Luque (15th) take part in the women's long jump.
In his NCAA Championships debut in Cardinal and Gold, Everett bided his time before attempting to make a move. In spite of not being in contention for the win as Oregon's Edward Cheserek and Virginia Tech's Thomas Curtin set a pace of their own, Everett moved his way up from 15th to 10th with 400 meters to do. However, he was unable to keep up with a group of runners who went after the top-eight point scoring spots and had to settle for 10th.
Everett, a graduate transfer from Columbia University, is now a three-time All-American in his collegiate career after earning his first ISU All-America honor.
At the women's long jump, Kate Hall marked her NCAA Indoor Championships debut with a 12th place finish with a best leap of 20-1. Hall got her top mark on her first jump, and while she was able to record a pair of legal jumps neither improved her first mark and she did not earn three more jumps. Hall does earn second-team All-America honors, her first All-America honors as a Cyclone.
In her NCAA Indoor Championships debut, sophomore Jhoanmy Luque left Birmingham with second-team All-America honors. The Venezuelan recorded her best jump on her third try, leaping 19-11, but it was not enough to advance and she finished the competition in 15th. Luque is now a two-time All-American, as she was also a second-team All-America honoree at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
