AMES, Iowa - The 2016 National Collegiate Women's Gymnastics Championships regional selections were announced by the NCAA Monday afternoon. Seven Cyclone gymnasts were chosen to compete as individuals at the regional hosted at the University of Minnesota on Saturday, Apr. 2. Iowa State will be represented on all four events by both all-around competitors and individual event specialists.
Selected for the all-around competition were sophomore Haylee Young and freshman Meaghan Sievers. This will be Young's second season competing as an all-around competitor at a regional competition. She has shown improvement this year, earning a career-high 39.450 at a home quad meet on Feb. 21, which earned her Big 12 Gymnast of the Week. Sievers has competed in the all-around at 11 of the Cyclones' 12 meets this season, also showing improvement and recording a career-high 39.275 at No. 24 Illinois.
Two Cyclone gymnasts qualified as individual event specialists on vault, and one qualified as an alternate. Freshman Sydney Converse and sophomore Briana Ledesma will be competing at the Minneapolis Regional, and senior Sara Townsend will travel as an alternate. Both Converse and Ledesma have competed on vault in 11 contests this season, both setting career-highs of 9.825. Townsend has competed in 10 meets on the event, setting her career-high against No. 17 Iowa with a 9.800.
Hilary Green will be representing Iowa State on the uneven bars as an individual event specialist. Green has proven to be one of the Cyclones strongest competitors on the uneven bars, tying for the season individual-high score on the event with Meaghan Sievers with a 9.900. This tied Green's career-high on the event, as she earned a 9.900 once last season as a freshman.
Senior Alex Marasco and Converse will both be competing on balance beam at the Minneapolis Regional. Marasco earned a career-high and tied for the team season high against No. 17 Iowa with a 9.900. She has been a consistent contributor on the beam in all four of her years competing for Iowa State. Converse has proven herself to be an asset to the Cyclones both on vault and beam, setting her career-high on beam with a 9.850 against No. 23 West Virginia.
On floor, Ledesma and sophomore Kelsey Paz were chosen to compete as event specialists and Courtney Middelkoop, also a sophomore, was chosen as an alternate. Ledesma made her breakout performance on floor at the Ozone Collegiate Gymnastics Meet in Knoxville, Tennessee, scoring a 9.875 on the event. She continued to improve, earning a career-high 9.900 to help the Cyclones push past No. 17 Iowa in March. Paz performs a strong and entertaining routine on floor, scoring a career-high 9.850 on the event this season. Middelkoop also came out as a serious competitor on floor early in the season, scoring her career-high in her first competition of the season with a 9.825.
The individuals selected to compete for the Cyclones at the regional meet will be competing at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Apr. 2.
