FORT WORTH, Texas - Freshman Meaghan Sievers competed as an individual event specialist at the NCAA Championship Friday afternoon. The Gary, South Dakota native competed on vault and earned a score of 9.775.
Sievers is one of just three Iowa State gymnasts in history to qualify for the National Championship as a freshman, joining the ranks of Erin Dethloff, who qualified in 2003, and Sissy Huey, who made her Championship debut in 1999.
Sievers qualified for the NCAA Championship after tying for first place on vault with a 9.900 at the Minneapolis Regional Competition. Sievers has excelled as an all-around gymnast for the Cyclones this season, but vault has proven to be her strongest event. She earned a career-high 9.925 on the apparatus at No. 24 Illinois and has lead the team on the event in over half of the meets this season.
The Cyclone will return to Iowa State next year for her sophomore season, joining eleven other underclassmen returners.
