Cyclone Academy Debuts With Summer Bridge Program
06.13.2016 | Academic Services
AMES, Iowa – The Office of Student-Athlete Development (OSAD) at Iowa State has started its 2016 summer bridge session, with this year's brand new addition to the program: Cyclone Academy. Incoming freshman and newcomers from seven different sports are enrolled in the program and have officially started their college careers at ISU.
Cyclone Academy, a new concept added this year to the traditional summer bridge program, is designed to assist incoming student-athletes with their transition to Iowa State University by providing the support system needed for a strong academic and athletic start. Student-athletes enroll in two summer courses, participate in daily study hall and learn about the support services provided to them, such as tutoring and mentoring.
Students participating in Cyclone Academy are taking six credit hours of classes for eight weeks, in addition to the structured study hall. The CyCad programs are Monday and Wednesday evenings starting with dinner at 5:30 p.m.
Student-athletes are able to prepare themselves for their first year experience by working on study skills, organization, time management and prioritization before the start of the fall semester.
In addition to taking courses, incoming student-athletes will participate in the Cyclone Academy Speaker Series. Each session features a different theme, providing assistance and advice to achieving excellence in their Iowa State experience.
Cyclone Speaker Series Topics:
What it Means to be a Cyclone Student-Athlete
Decision Making
Mental Health & Wellbeing
Academic Success Workshop
Financial Literacy
Cyclone Leadership Class
The program will be capped off with a community service event to reinforce the value that giving back to the community is an integral part of the Cyclone student-athlete experience.
