AMES, Iowa - Iowa State's Aly Cappaert was selected as the 2016 Big 12 Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, making her the first Cyclone softball player to be chosen for the award. The conference announced their selection Thursday afternoon.
The Ankeny, Iowa native maintained a 4.0 GPA in Higher Education in Leadership as a graduate student this year after completing her undergraduate coursework in Public Relations in just three years. Cappaert completed her career as a four-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team member, as well as being named to the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-District squad.
The senior's name is littered throughout the ISU program record book. She is the school's all-time leader in walks (93) and hitting streak (18 games), as well as sitting at No. 2 in career home runs (38), RBIs (138) and slugging percentage (.609). She is one of two players in school history with double digit home runs in three different seasons, and also maintained a .347 career batting average, the fourth-best mark in program history.
Cappaert was one of seven student-athletes to receive a sport-specific Big 12 Spring Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor, and one of just three to do so with a 4.0 GPA. Iowa State has now had 15 student-athletes named Big 12 Scholar Athlete of the Year since the award's inception in 2012, more than any other school in the conference.
