AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State soccer team opens the regular season this weekend. The Cyclones will take on the No. 7 Florida Gators on Friday at James G. Pressly Stadium in Gainesville, Fla. at 6 p.m. CST. The game will be streamed live on WatchESPN and the ESPN app. Iowa State will then return home to take on South Dakota State on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Cyclone Sports Complex and the game will be aired on Cyclones.tv.
Last time out
The Cyclones are coming off of a 1-1 tie against Northern Illinois in their second of two exhibitions. In the 20th minute, Iowa State was able to strike first when Brooke Tasker put a corner kick right in front of the net and Koree Willer was able to bury the goal. The Huskies came out firing in the second half and tied the game in the 46th minute.
Scouting the Gators
The Cyclones and Gators face off Friday at 6 p.m. at the James G. Pressly Stadium in the first matchup ever between the two teams. Florida was victorious in both of their tune-ups against Texas A&M and USF. The Gators return eight starters from a talented squad that went 19-4-1 and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. Senior forward Savannah Jordan leads the Gator attack. Jordan racked up 24 goals and seven assists in 2015.
Scouting the Jackrabbits
The Cyclones and Jackrabbits kick off on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Cyclone Sports Complex in Iowa State's regular season home opener. South Dakota State is coming off a 12-6-3 season in 2015 where they won the Summit League Championship to advance to the NCAA Tournament. Iowa State won last year's matchup 1-0. The Jackrabbits dropped both exhibitions entering the 2016 season and they will take on Utah State prior to playing Iowa State.
What to watch for
The key to both games this weekend will be how the Cyclones are able to attack offensively. Forwards Koree Willer and Klasey Medelberg combined with attacking midfielder Brooke Tasker will need to be creative in getting past the strong defensive backlines that they will be against. Head coach Tony Minatta was impressed with redshirt freshman Kasey Opfer and the impact that she made on the pitch when she entered the game off of the bench in the last exhibition game.
