AMES, Iowa – One week from tonight, the Iowa State volleyball team will kick off the regular season against Wichita State inside Hilton Coliseum. First though, Cyclone Nation will get its first glimpse of the squad at the Cardinal and Gold Scrimmage Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hilton. Admission is free.
Fresh off their 10th-straight NCAA Volleyball Championship season, head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch's Cyclones are well-poised for another strong season. ISU will begin the 2016 season with high expectations, starting the season receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll and being picked to finish third in the Big 12. Iowa State returns 12 letterwinners and six starters from last season's squad. Among the returnees are 2016 Big 12 Preseason Team members Alexis Conaway and Morgan Kuhrt, and 2015 Big 12 Freshman of the Year Jess Schaben.
One of the storylines of the early season is the competition to take over the libero spot vacated by the graduated Caitlin Nolan, a two-time AVCA All-American and two-time Big 12 Libero of the Year. Fans will have the opportunity to see the back-row talents of Branen Berta, Abby Phillips, Sami Hillmer and Hali Hillegas, with the latter coming off a redshirt season in 2015.
Hillmer, a freshman from Urbandale, is one of three Cyclone newcomers to the 2016 squad, along with fellow Iowan freshman Anna Kiel and Evansville transfer Genesis Miranda.
