LINCOLN, Neb. – The Iowa State volleyball team struggled to fire offensively despite a tough serving night for No. 1 Nebraska as the Cornhuskers swept Iowa State 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-12) Friday evening at the Devaney Center. The loss dropped ISU to 2-2 on the year, while NU improves to 3-0.
The Iowa State offense was restricted to a .044 hitting percentage, as Nebraska racked up 12.5 total blocks on the day. Nebraska did present ISU with opportunities to stick around, as the Huskers fired 13 service errors on the match. Ciara Capezio and Jess Schaben led ISU with seven kills each, while Branen Berta racked up 12 digs.
Early 4-0 Run Enough to Take Huskers to Set Win
The Cyclones started off strong, getting the middles involved early to help get a quick 3-0 lead. However, the No. 1 Huskers eventually settled in as they ran off five-in-a-row, three via ISU errors, to build a 12-7 advantage. While the Cyclones played well the rest of the set, the damage was done as ISU was never able to bring the Nebraska advantage down under three points. NU pulled away late, getting the lead back up to five as Samara West was stuffed by Kadie Rolfzen and Briana Holman to make it 22-17 Nebraska. The Huskers closed out the set on the second asking when Andie Malloy fired a kill to give the home team the set 25-20.
Mid-Set Run Puts Nebraska Up 2-0
A key run happened early in the third as ISU tried to feed Jess Schaben, but she was blocked on three-straight occasions by the NU block to put the Huskers up 6-3. This time, however, ISU was able to battle back eventually locking the set back up at 9-9. The deadlock came and went, as Nebraska reeled off the next four points to get back ahead 13-9. NU ran away with the set, piecing together a 5-0 run to get ahead 19-11. The nation's number one team closed out the set on the first try as Mikaela Foecke buried a cross-court kill to give NU the second 25-17.
Change in Strategy Can't Stop NU Sweep
Trying to contend with the dominant NU block, Iowa State moved over to a 6-2 offense to start the third set. However, it yielded little results as Nebraska went on a 6-0 run via some strong serving from Annika Albrecht to pull ahead 15-6. ISU went back into its 5-1, but there was no keeping Nebraska from the sweep as they would pull ahead by as many as 13 points in the frame. The Cornhuskers ripped their way to a .583 hitting percentage for the set. Nebraska put away the match on the second match point when Kadie Rolfzen put away her ninth kill of the evening to give NU the set 25-12.
