AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State soccer team (7-3, 1-1 Big 12) hosts No. 23 Oklahoma (9-2-1, 2-0 Big 12) in the Cyclones' conference home opener on Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
Iowa State will be celebrating 20 Seasons of Cyclone soccer this weekend with many former players coming back to Ames for the game. It is also #CyclONEnation appreciation night and many great prizes will be given out to fans who attend.
Last Time Out
Iowa State split a pair of road Big 12 contests last weekend. On Friday, Iowa State snapped their eight-game conference losing streak with a 1-0 win over Oklahoma State. Big 12 Freshman of the Week, Hannah Cade, scored the game-winning goal in the 31st minute in highlight fashion. Redshirt freshman Kasey Opfer chipped a pass forward and Cade struck the bouncing ball to perfection over the Cowgirl keeper's reach and just under the crossbar. The Iowa State backline remained strong and only allowed one shot on goal. Lindsey Hendon tallied her conference-leading sixth shutout. The Cyclones fell at No. 25 Texas Tech, 3-0, on a windy Sunday in Lubbock, Texas.
Scouting the Sooners
Oklahoma has put together a great start to the 2016 season, climbing to No. 6 in the latest RPI, and will come into Ames riding a seven-game winning streak including a pair of conference wins over TCU and Texas. Senior forward Liz Keester leads the Sooner offensive attack in every offensive category. The Texas A&M transfer has scored six goals, including four game-winners, and has also recorded four assists.Â
Oklahoma still relies on their strong defense to keep them in the game. The Sooners have only allowed two multiple goal games, against No. 3 Virginia in a 3-0 loss and the other in a 3-2 OT win at Tulsa.
What to Watch For
Iowa State will be looking at their forwards for more production going into this tough Big 12 matchup. Senior Koree Willer and sophomore Klasey Medelberg will need to provide more scoring opportunities. This will be a battle of strong defenses, so the Cyclone front line will need to be able to contend with the Sooner attack. On the defensive end, it will be beneficial if senior Madi Ott is back in the lineup at center back after missing the past three games due to injury.
The game will be aired on Cyclones.tv. Fans can also follow Iowa State Soccer's Twitter account (@cycloneSCR) for live updates on the game. Check Cyclones.com for results after the conclusion of the game.
