AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State soccer (4-2, 0-0 Big 12) team fell to in-state rival Iowa (6-1, 0-0 Big Ten), 2-0, at the Cyclone Sports Complex on Friday night. The Hawkeyes have now won six straight games.
Turning Point of the Game
After 66 minutes of scoreless action, Olivia Fiegel for the Hawkeyes received the ball inside the 18 squared up to the net. Fiegel was able to slide her shot past a diving Lindsey Hendon to put the Hawks up, 1-0. Bri Toelle extended their lead in the 76th minute on a shot into the top left corner for her sixth goal of the season.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes to...
Taylor Wagner. The sophomore midfielder fired four shots in her 70 minutes of action. Wagner had the Cyclones' best chance at scoring in just the second minute when she fired a fantastic shot that got over the goalkeeper's reach, but the shot was stopped by the crossbar.
Coach Said It
"At times we played well, but I think we let the moment get to us a little bit," head coach Tony Minatta said. "Fundamentally, with some passing and connecting passes, just wasn't there. We created some nice opportunities and we did well at times, but it just wasn't consistent enough to put a game away. We had great chances, we came out and hit the crossbar during the first minute of the game. We had some good opportunities on goal, it was a great match, well played on both times. They had some good opportunities coming at us and we had some good opportunities at them, it was going to be the team that made the mistake and the team that capitalized on that mistake and unfortunately we were the team that made the mistake."
Game Notes
* Iowa now leads the all-time series 11-6-2.
* Junior goalkeeper Lindsey Hendon recorded four saves.
* Iowa State shot their season-high 17 shots.
