CONWAY, South Carolina – A dominant performance by the Iowa State backcourt led the Cyclones to a 75-64 win over Boise State in the championship game of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Myrtle Beach Sunday in the HTC Center. The win moved ISU to 3-2 on the year, while Boise State is now 4-1.
Iowa State's guards put up some outstanding numbers Sunday evening. How it Happened
After a scoreless first two minutes the Cyclones rolled up six-in-a-row to get ahead. Even as Steve Prohm rotated guys off the bench, Iowa State was able to continue to protect and expand the lead with the Cyclones going on an 10-0 run to get ahead by double figures at 28-14.
The Cyclones finished the first half on an 11-2 run, with Lindell Wigginton hitting a baseline jumper in the waning seconds to take a 39-21 lead into the locker room. ISU's defense held the Broncos to 8-of-29 shooting in the first half (28 percent), 2-of-14 (14 percent) from 3-point range.
With Nick Weiler-Babb running the show again, Iowa State flew out of the gates, with Donovan Jackson getting seven in the first five minutes of the second half as the Cyclones raced ahead 52-28. From there, Boise stormed back into the contest, going on a 27-8 run that brought the Cyclone lead down to five points at 60-55.
The Cyclones, led by Jackson, were able to hold their neve and bring home the title with the Cyclone guard putting in ISU's final 11 points of the contest to break the Puerto Rico Tip-Off record for points in a tournament.
Players of Note
