AMES, Iowa - Sophia Steinmeyer from West Lawn, Pa. is looking to make an impact for the Cyclones this season.
Steinmeyer started getting involved with gymnastics when she was just 19-months-old. "My mom put me in mommy and me classes." she explained. "It was just always fun, and I kept progressing very well. I just kept going to the gym and it was really fun for me."
Steinmeyer has been committed to Iowa State since her junior year of high school. In high school, she had a phenomenal career competing for Berks Gymnastics Academy as a Level 10 gymnast. She also competed in the JO Nationals where she placed second on vault and eighth all-around. Steinmeyer is a two-time Region 7 Champion on vault, and earned 19 top-10 finishes at the Pennsylvania State Championships in her Level 10 career.Â
During her very impressive career Steinmeyer says she credits her parents and coaches for getting her to this point.Â
"Without my parents there is no way I would be here," Steinmeyer reflected. "They have sacrificed a lot of time and energy. They put me and my brother first over them."
The Cyclones got a pledge from Steinmeyer in November 2016. She considers coming to Iowa State is one of her biggest accomplishments.Â
"It's very family-oriented here," Steinmeyer observed. "When I came for my visit, it was definitely something I wanted to be a part of."
Steinmeyer is known for her performance on the beam or vault (I forgot which one) and is a great all-around gymnast. She said she's excited for her upcoming freshman season. "I want to contribute as much as I can and help the team get to where we want to be this year."Â
Steinmeyer and her teammates open up the season at Arizona State on January 6, and you can catch them at their first home meet on January 12 against Arizona.
