Cyclones Extend Winning Streak to Five

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The Iowa State tennis team (8-2, 0-0 Big 12) grabbed a pair of victories on Sunday against Stetson University and Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla.

The Cyclones began the day with a 4-0 sweep over Stetson.

Iowa State took the early lead over the Hatters by winning the doubles point. The pairings of Annabella Bonadonna/Margarita Timakova and Karen Alvarez/Regina Espindola won close victories to help the Cyclones take two of the three matches in doubles action.

Iowa State was dominant in singles play as they won the first three matches.
Regina Espindola and Margarita Timakova were impressive in their matches for the Cyclones by winning in straight-sets. Espindola topped Sofia Ferding, 6-3, 7-6 (5) and Timakova defeated Alexe Viaud in the No. 5 matchup.

Sami Budai was also victorious in her match, but it required her to fight back after dropping the first set to Arijana Korac 2-6. Budai was able to regroup and went on to win the next sets 6-2, 6-4.

In the second dual of the day, the Cyclones downed Flagler College 4-1. The Saints are ranked twelfth in Divison II by the ITA.

Once again, the Cyclones were able to get out the gates quickly by winning the doubles point.

In singles, Iowa State nabbed three straight-set victories from Budai, Espindola, and Bonadonna. Annabella Bonadonna and Sami Budai were particularly impressive in their wins. Bonadonna got a win over Hilary Hanton, 6-0, 6-2. Budai defeated Lizanne Jinkertz, who is ranked #44 in singles in Division II, 6-4, 6-1.

Regina Espindola continued her undefeated streak in singles over the weekend. The sophomore out of Tabasco, Mexico raised her record to 9-0 during the dual season.

The Cyclones are currently on a five game winning streak and have been victorious in 8 of their last 9 outings.
