AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State tennis team (8-2, 0-0 Big 12) will look to continue its hot streak this weekend when it takes on in-state foe UNI (5-1, 0-0 MVC) this Saturday.
The Cyclones are currently on a five-match winning streak and have won eight of the last nine duals.
Iowa State was able to extend its streak last weekend with wins against Stetson and Flagler.
Sami Budai, Regina Espindola, and Margarita Timakova went undefeated in singles play. Budai and Espindola have been impressive for Iowa State during the spring season by going undefeated. Budai is at 5-0 and Espindola has gone 9-0.
The Cyclones were able to start strong against the Hatters and Saints by taking the doubles point. The pairings of Margarita Timakova/Annabella Bonadonna and Karen Alvarez/Regina Espindola both went 2-0 during the weekend.
Doubles play will be key for a Cyclone victory this weekend when Iowa State takes on UNI. The Panthers also have a winning streak of their own, winning their last three.
In singles, Jieke Stroobant leads UNI at the No. 1 position. Stroobant is 4-2 on the dual season in singles.
The last time Iowa State battled with the Panthers was last season. The Cyclones swept that match 4-0. Sami Budai met Stroobant in the dual last year, and Budai came out victorious in straight sets, winning 6-3, 6-1.
The dual with UNI will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Black Hawk Tennis Club in Waterloo.
