LAWRENCE, Kansas – For the first time in 12 years, the Iowa State men's basketball team left Lawrence victorious. Iowa State came from 15 points down to defeat No. 3 Kansas 92-89 in overtime Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse. The win improves ISU to 14-8 overall on the season and 6-4 in conference play. The Jayhawks fall to 20-3 and 8-2 in league play.
The Cyclones snapped Kansas' 54-game home-winning streak in the confines of Allen Fieldhouse, with ISU getting its first win in Lawrence since Curtis Stinson guided the Cyclones to a 63-61 overtime win on Feb. 12, 2005. KU lost at home for only the 10th time under head coach Bill Self, with ISU being the only team to do the job twice.
The historic victory was guided by a school record 18 3-pointers, seven of which were drained by Deonte Burton. Burton finished the contest with 29 points on 11-of-21 shooting, 7-of-9 from 3-point range and eight rebounds. Monté Morris played 44 of a possible 45 minutes, finishing with 25 points and seven assists. For the 45th time in his Cyclone career, Morris did not commit a turnover. Nazareth Mitrou-Long had 22 points, including six 3-pointers.
How It Happened
Iowa State had a good first nine minutes of action, with Deonte Burton draining his first three shots to get ISU to a 15-15 tie. However, the Cyclones limited post depth was tested with Merrill Holden and Solomon Young each getting two fouls before the halfway point of the first half. KU controlled the boards and paint, with ISU only getting one rebound in the first 17 minutes as the Jayhawks build their lead to 11 on a Devontae' Graham 3-pointer at 38-27.
Compounding the struggles was Kansas' strong shooting effort, as the Jayhawks went to the locker room having made 70.4 percent of their first-half shots, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range. Even with ISU making 13-of-26 and 6-of-14 from 3-point land, the Cyclones found themselves in a 14-point hole, 52-38.
Iowa State hung tough at the start of the second half, with Deonte Burton and Nazareth Mitrou-Long both delivering from long-range to bring the KU advantage down to eight points at 60-52. The Cyclones began to run the floor and create opportunities in transition, with Monté Morris draining a transition 3-pointer to cut the Kansas advantage down to four at 65-61. Mitrou-Long made it a one-possession game with an NBA-range 3-pointer at 67-64.
Burton completed the journey to get ISU back ahead with a 3-pointer from the right wing to move ahead 75-73 with 6:16 to play. The next possession, Mitrou-Long drained the Cyclones' 15th 3-pointer of the contest to give ISU its biggest lead of the contest at 78-73. The Jayhawks rallied with a quick 8-1 KU run, capped by an old-fashioned three-point play by Frank Mason III to put Kansas back ahead 81-79.
The teams traded three-straight empty possessions before Morris drained a 3-pointer to give ISU an 82-81 advantage with under a minute to play. Mason III knotted it back up at the line with 50 seconds to play. Morris' floater went off the iron and Kansas scrambled the rebound to get one last look, but Mason's 17-footer hit off the back iron to require an extra five minutes of basketball.
The teams traded bricks and turnovers for the first two minutes of the extra period before Morris drained a long two-pointer to get ahead 84-82. The Cyclones moved the lead up to five points as Burton hit his seventh 3-pointer of the game to make it 87-82 Cyclones with 1:59 to play. A Svi Mykhailiuk lay-in, a Graham free throw and a Josh Jackson free throw cut the ISU advantage to one with under a minute left.
ISU kept its cool, and Morris drove and kicked out to a wide open Donovan Jackson, who hit ISU's 18th 3-pointer of the contest to get ahead 90-86 with 27.6 seconds to go. The drama was not complete, as Graham hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to cut the ISU advantage to one at 90-89 with 10 seconds to play. Morris was fouled with 7.5 seconds to play, and calmly drained his free throws to make it 92-89. Mykhailiuk's 3-pointer was short and ended up in Burton's hands with 0.1 seconds remaining.
Players of Note
Deonte Burton did a little bit of everything for Iowa State on Saturday. The senior was the one Cyclone who was clicking in the first half, keeping ISU in the contest while the Jayhawks shot 70 percent from the field. He continued to deliver when ISU made its comeback in the second half, causing mismatches with his athleticism and hitting big shots from deep. Burton finished with 29 points on 11-of-21 shooting, including 7-of-9 shooting from 3-point range. He also had a team-high eight rebounds.
Monté Morris did what he does best: make big plays, and do not commit turnovers. Morris had 25 points on 9-of-16 shooting, hitting a trio of 3-pointers in that collection. He also had seven assists and no turnovers, his 45th career game putting up a bagel in the turnover department.
Nazareth Mitrou-Long hit many big shots in the second half, never letting his confidence waver from deep. The Canadian recorded 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including 6-of-11 from 3-point range.
