Cyclones Drop Wyoming 4-3

URBANDALE, Iowa – The Iowa State tennis team (12-2, 0-0 Big 12) defeated the Wyoming Cowgirls 4-3 in a non-conference matchup at Life Time Fitness on Friday.

The Cowgirls brought a six-match win streak to Urbandale but a strong effort by the Cyclones ended it.

Iowa State was able to win the doubles point in a resilient manner. After dropping the first doubles match, the Cyclones came back to win the next two. Sami Budai and Maty Cancini finished doubles play with a 7-5 win over van Der Ploeg and Koonik.

Budai, the No. 100 singles player in the ITA rankings, was impressive in her straight set win over Magdalena Stencel at the No.1 position. Margarita Timakova also notched a straight set win for the Cyclones.

Regina Espindola continued her undefeated streak in singles. Espindola won a back and forth match against Tessa van Der Ploeg 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

The win by Iowa State was the ninth-straight for the Cyclones.

Iowa State will look to build off their momentum when they take on the West Virginia Mountaineers, tomorrow in the conference opener. The match will be at 2 p.m. at Life Time Fitness in Urbandale.
