AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State tennis team (11-2, 0-0 Big 12) returns home this weekend to take on the Wyoming Cowgirls (9-2, 0-0 Mountain West) and West Virginia Mountaineers (4-6, 0-0 Big 12).
The match against Wyoming will be at 3 p.m. on Friday. The Cyclones will be back in action on Saturday against West Virginia at 2 p.m. The duals this weekend will be at Life Time Fitness in Urbandale.
The Cyclones are coming off a road trip in which they won two matches against Augustana and Sioux Falls in South Dakota.
Iowa State used doubles play to jump-start their efforts in both matches. The Cyclones were impressive as they swept all six matches against the Vikings and Cougars.
Maty Cancini and Liera Bender highlighted singles play for Iowa State. Cancini went 2-0 and got the straight set win over Kylie Simons of Sioux Falls after moving to the No. 1 spot. Liera Bender was able to secure her first singles victory of the dual season by beating Cortney McCans 6-4, 6-3.
Samantha Budai has been on a successful run the past two weeks. Budai was named Big 12 Player of the Week last week, she is back in the ITA rankings at No. 100, and she continues to climb in the Cyclone records. Over the weekend, Budai moved into a tie for third place with 133 career wins. Budai is also third in doubles wins (69) and singles victories (64).
The Cyclones will be putting their eight-match winning streak to the test this weekend against Wyoming and West Virginia.
The Wyoming Cowgirls will be bringing their own win streak of six matches when they visit Urbandale.
Dorottya Jonas and Tessa van Der Ploeg have led Wyoming throughout the dual season. Jonas is 7-2 in singles play and 3-1 at the No. 1 position while Tessa van Der Ploeg has gone 8-0 in singles.
Iowa State will then look to get its first win in Big 12 play this season when the Cyclones take on West Virginia in the conference opener. Since the Mountaineers joined the conference in the 2012-13 season, the Cyclones have gone 4-0 against WVU.
