AMES, Iowa - The Big 12 Conference announced the 2017 Academic All-Big 12 Gymnastics teams on Tuesday afternoon. Five Iowa State gymnasts were honored this year, including four on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team.
In order to qualify for the award, student-athletes must have above a 3.00 GPA or higher in two previous semesters or cumulatively throughout their academic career. The honored student-athletes must also have participated in at least 60 percent of their team's contests. True freshmen and transfers are ineligible for the award.
Four Cyclone gymnasts earned the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, which requires a student-athlete to maintain at least a 3.20 GPA. The gymnast honored include three juniors: Hilary Green, majoring in Diet and Exercise Science, Courtney Middelkoop, majoring in Industrial Engineering, and Kelsey Paz, majoring in Accounting. This is Green and Paz's second year making the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, while Middelkoop makes her first appearance on the First Team after earning Second-Team honors last season. Meaghan Sievers also made the First Team for her first time as a sophomore in Kinesiology and Health.
One Iowa State gymnast made the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team, which requires between a 3.00 and 3.19 GPA. MJ Johnson earned the award, her first conference academic award. Johnson is a sophomore in Pre-Business from St. Paul, Minnesota.
