Williams Breaks School Record In Loss At Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – Iowa State (17-32, 2-12 Big 12) dropped a 7-1 decision to Texas (25-19, 4-7 Big 12) on Saturday at McCombs Field, as the Longhorns evened the conference series at 1-1. Freshman Sami Williams broke an Iowa State single-season school record with her 17th double of the season, which ranks No. 1 among all NCAA DI freshmen.

Following two scoreless innings to open the game, Texas broke the contest open with the first multi-run frame of the series in the bottom of the third. A walk, followed by a pair of base hits up the middle brought the first run to the plate, including an RBI for Randel Leahy. Kelli Hanzel then came to the plate and smacked a two-RBI double to left, giving the Longhorns a 3-0 lead. All three runs were scored with two outs.
UT followed suit in the bottom of the fourth, putting three more runs on the board. The Longhorns picked up two hits, three walks and capitalized on a trio of Cyclone errors in the frame to extend the lead to 6-0. Taylor Ellsworth and Leahy both picked up RBI base hits in the inning.
Williams helped put Iowa State on the board in the top of the fifth with her record-breaking 17th double of the season. With fellow freshman Logan Schaben on second base, Williams picked up her 29th RBI on a shot to right field, cutting the deficit to 6-1.
The Longhorns tacked on an additional run in the home half of the fifth on an RBI single up the middle by Celina Felix. Cyclone junior Brianna Weilbacher pitched the complete game, giving up seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits, to go with three strikeouts.

Iowa State will have an opportunity to win its first Big 12 series since April 7, 2013 in Sunday's series finale at McCombs Field. First pitch is set for 11 a.m., and the game will be broadcast live on the Longhorn Network.
