05.25.2017 | Gymnastics
AMES, Iowa – Former Iowa State men's gymnast Mike Jacki was honored with the Frank Bare Award at the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame last week. The Frank Bare Award is presented to people who "have made exceptional contributions in promoting and growing the sport of gymnastics throughout the Untied States."
Jacki, who was previously inducted into the Iowa State Letterwinners Hall of Fame in 2014 and the United States Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 2004, has been a presence in American gymnastics for over 40 years. As a gymnast at Iowa State, he was a four-time Big Eight Champion, including the all-around in 1968, and an All-American during his ISU career.
After graduating from ISU, Jacki teamed with another former Cyclone, Jerry Fontana, in starting Camp Tsukara, one of the first summer gymnastics camps in the United States. After a stint working in sales for the gymnastics equipment company AMF American Inc., Jacki ascended to the presidency of the U.S. Gymnastics Federation in 1993, a position he held for a decade. He has also held leadership positions within the U.S. Olympic Committee and the International Gymnastics Federation.
Jacki was also a highly-respected judge in the United States gymnastics community, having worked at seven NCAA Championships during his career.
More recently, Jacki has returned to his roots of gymnastics camps, serving as senior vice president for Powder Woodward, LLC, which runs gymnastics and action sports camps across the United States and in China.
