AMES, Iowa – Iowa State took the Cyclone Invitational tournament title with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-10) win over New Mexico Saturday evening at Hilton Coliseum. ISU finishes the weekend 3-0, while New Mexico fell to 2-1.
The Iowa State effort was led by Cyclone Invite Co-MVP Grace Lazard, who had nine kills and four blocks (one solo, three assists). Jess Schaben had eight kills and 15 digs, while fellow Cyclone Invite Co-MVP Alexis Conaway had seven kills at a .500 hitting percentage and four blocks of her own (all block assists).
Set One: Iowa State 25 New Mexico 19
Iowa State broke open a 5-5 set with an 8-0 run that New Mexico was never able to reel ISU back in from. The Cyclone offense clicked at a .364 hitting percentage, with Grace Lazard converting six of her first seven swings for kills. Genesis Miranda closed out the set for the Cyclones with a kill at 25-19.
Set Two: Iowa State 25 New Mexico 20
Another mid-set run keyed the Cyclone effort as ISU erased an 8-7 deficit with a 5-0 run to push ahead of the Lobos 12-8. The Cyclone defense went big, recording 3.5 blocks while holding UNM to a .105 hitting percentage. Jess Schaben locked up the final two ISU points of the set with kills to put the score at 25-20 Cyclones.
Set Three: Iowa State 25 New Mexico 10
The ISU offense was totally dominant, as the Cyclones recorded 14 kills on no attack errors at a .560 hitting percentage in the set. Samara West heated up on the right side, getting five kills on seven swings as Monique Harris dished out 11 assists. Iowa State finished the match on an 8-0 run with Schaben locking in the final point with a kill at 25-10.
Player of the Game
Grace Lazard. Head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch praised Lazard in her post-match press conference for picking up where she left off from at the end of 2016 across the weekend. Against the Lobos, the Londoner had nine kills at a .333 hitting percentage and four blocks. For the weekend, Lazard had 25 kills at a .425 hitting percentage, and 12 blocks (three solo, nine assists).

Iowa State embarks on its first road trip next weekend as the Cyclones will head to the Dayton Invitational. In Ohio, the Cyclones will take on hosts Dayton on Friday night at 6 p.m. Central Time, and Pittsburgh next Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Central.
