STILLWATER, Okla. – The National Wrestling Hall of Fame announced its Class of 2019. Iowa State wrestling legend, and United States World Team member, Carl Adams was one of the four Distinguished Members of the Class of 2019.
Adams joins an elite club of Iowa State wrestlers who have been inducted as distinguished members. He joins the ranks of Glen Brand, Harold Nichols, Dan Gable, George Martin, Ben Peterson, Dick Barker, Nate Carr, Kevin Jackson, Larry Hayes, Les Anderson, Cael Sanderson, Chris Taylor and Ron Gray who are all Distinguished Members of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Adams career at Iowa State was Hall of Fame worthy. He became the first true freshman to earn All-America honors in 1969, when he placed fifth nationally. Adams went on to win two individual titles at 158 pounds. He was a member of three Iowa State National Championship teams (1969, 1970, 1972).
After an outstanding collegiate career, Adams remained at Iowa State and coached with the legendary Dr. Harold Nichols. With the help of Adams, Iowa State won two team titles (1973, 1977) and posted top four finishes in each of Adams' six seasons as an assistant coach. He coached 40 All-Americans during that time and six individual national champions.
Adams was inducted into the Iowa State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005. The induction ceremony is set to be held at the 43rd Annual Honors Weekend on May 31-June 1, 2019 in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
