AMES, Iowa – Natalie Horowitz of Longmeadow, Massachusetts is the next freshman ready to make an impact for the Cyclones. An early-season injury briefly sidelined Horowitz, but she is back and thinks highly of her incoming freshman class teammates.
"I feel like our whole freshman class has been there for each other, because we were here all summer," Horowitz noted. "When one of us has a bad day we all have a bad day, and one of us has a good day we're all happy for each other. If we were alone it would be a disaster, but because we are all together we try to be there for each other."
Horowitz is the first Massachusetts native during the Jay Ronayne tenure to be on a Cyclones gymnastics squad. Her start to gymnastics in The Bay State was a little different from most gymnasts. She began in mommy and me classes but then progressed into elite level gymnastics. However, she did not feel like it was for her.
"I was really good when I was little," she stated. "I started to do the elite programs and realized that wasn't for me, but I still liked gymnastics so then I did Junior Olympics."
Horowitz is a four-time JO National Qualifier and placed eighth in the All-Around at the Level 10 Nationals. She had many colleges and universities calling her to compete at their school but decided on Iowa State.
"I liked the atmosphere," she added. "I went to a lot of other schools, but it wasn't like a family. Here everyone felt like they were connected, and I really liked that."
Having to overcome an early-season injury is tough for any student-athlete to do. Horowitz even admitted she was irritated when it happened, but she still has high expectations for the upcoming season.
"We want to be better than we were last season," Horowitz concluded. "The coaches will have higher expectations for us, but we have such a talented freshman class and we hope to do bigger things than they are expecting. I feel like with this group anyone can do anything they want to do, and things could be changing every week."
Iowa State fans can see Horowitz and this year's team in the home season-opener on January 18 against Illinois State at 6:30 p.m.
