AMES, Iowa – Incoming freshman Maddy Langkamp is the first Wisconsin native since the 2009 season to be on the Iowa State gymnastics team. Langkamp, who hails from Lannon, Wisconsin, started competing in gymnastics when she was just three years old.
Langkamp started and finished her junior gymnastics club career at LaFleur's gymnastics in Germantown, Wisconsin. During her club career, she was a two-time Junior Olympics Nationals Qualifier where she tied for 11th place on the uneven bars and placed second on the uneven bars and seventh in the All-Around at the 2018 Region 4 Championships.
Langkamp only had four other people on her high school gymnastics team at Brown Deer High School, so coming to Iowa State and competing at Hilton will be a big change.
Iowa State was ranked within the top-15 in attendance last year so Langkamp can expect a big change in atmospheres this season.
"I'm looking forward to seeing the college gymnastics meet atmosphere," she said. "I heard it's very different than club."
Since Iowa State has 10 freshman joining the program for the 2019 season, Langkamp explained why her reason for joining the program might vary from the other 10 freshman.
"For me, it was definitely the community feeling and the family atmosphere in the gym," she stated. "Ames is also close to home, at least as close as it is for gymnastics. The culture here was also unmatchable during my recruiting."
The gymnastics team lost some major contributions from last season, so Langkamp coming into the season vying for a spot in the lineup isn't out the question.
"I think competing on bars and making that lineup would be a personal goal of mine," she explained. "Also making a floor lineup this season would be a goal."
Cyclone fans can see Langkamp and her teammates at Hilton Coliseum in the Cyclones' home opener on Friday, January 18 at 6:30 p.m.
