DELAND, Fla. – The Iowa State tennis team (5-2, 0-0 Big 12) wrapped its trip to Florida as they met with Stetson on Saturday. The Hatters topped the Cyclones, 4-3.
No. 1 doubles partners Maty Cancini and Regina Espindola defeated Arijana Korac and Vicky Geurinckx, 6-2. Annabella Bonadonna and Erin Freeman, who played at the No. 2 doubles position, fell in their match to duo Brooke Milner and Lucie Renault, 6-3. At the No. 3 spot, Margarita Timakova and Ekaterina Repina secured a close match, winning a 7-6 (7-5) match over Hatters Maxine Bateman and Danel Ashirova.
The only Cyclones to pick up wins in singles action were juniors Espindola and Bonadonna. At the No. 2 singles position, Espindola faced Ashirova and won 6-2, 4-6, 3-4, Ret. Bonadonna, who played at the No. 6 spot, secured a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Bateman. Cancini, the No. 1 singles player, fell in her match to Korac, 6-2, 6-4. Repina, who played at the No. 3 singles spot, was unable to stay strong through her long 6-4, 6-4 (7-5) match to Geurinckx. Erin Freeman fell in her match against Renault, losing 4-6, 6-0, 6-0. Timakova also had a long singles match, falling 1-6, 7-6, (7-2), 6-1 to Milner at the No. 5 position.
ISU will return to play on Saturday, Feb. 24 and 25, facing Creighton, Nebraska and Omaha respectively.
