MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – No. 21 West Virginia (21-8, 10-6 Big 12) defeated Iowa State (13-15, 4-12 Big 12) 85-70 Saturday evening in Morgantown.
The Cyclones fought to the end despite being shorthanded, suiting up only seven players. Nick Weiler-Babb and Solomon Young sat out with injuries and Donovan Jackson missed the game while attending the funeral of his father, Donald.
Lindell Wigginton, who was one of three freshmen who started for the Cyclones, led ISU with 29 points. Wigginton buried four 3-pointers to give him 62 on the season, breaking ISU's school-record for 3-pointers made in a season by a rookie (Jake Sullivan, 61 in 2000-01). He also tied his career high with 10 field goals made.
Terrence Lewis, who earned his first career start, matched his career high with 12 points and set a career best with three 3-pointers made.
Cameron Lard, another freshman starter, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked three shots in the loss. Lard now has 55 blocks on the season to tie for seventh on ISU's season list.
The Mountaineers had four players score in double figures, led by Jevon Carter's 24 points.
How It Happened
Iowa State stayed close with the Mountaineers in the first half. ISU led 19-15 after Wigginton scored on back-to-back possessions. WVU then mounted a 13-2 run to go ahead 28-21 with just under seven minutes left in the opening period.
Back-to-back 3-pointers from Lewis and Wigginton spurred a 7-0 run to knot the score at 28-28 with 3:40 remaining. WVU, however, closed the half on an 11-2 run to lead at the break, 39-30.
The Mountaineer lead ballooned to 47-32 until Talley converted a conventional 3-point play to close the gap to 47-35 with 14:20 left in the game. The Mountaineers soon took an 18-point lead and the Cyclones never trimmed the deficit to below double digits the rest of the way.
Players of Note
Zoran Talley Jr. had a solid overall game, recording nine points, three rebounds and nine assists. Talley took over much of the ballhandling duties on West Virginia's full-court press and trapping defense. His nine assists was a career high.
Cameron Lard posted eight points, 10 rebounds and three blocks tonight. It was Lard's ninth double-double digit rebounding effort of the season.
