AMES, Iowa – No. 25 Iowa State was victorious in the tri-meet Sunday afternoon with a season high score of 196.450. With this score, the Cyclones will see an increase in their ranking and could be ranked as high as 22. This would be their highest ranking at this point of the season since 2011. Iowa State hit 24 of 24 routines this afternoon which is something they haven't done all season. The Cyclones improved to 15-2 on the season, picking up wins over Lindenwood (195.175) and Illinois State (193.050)
Head coach Jay Ronayne was very happy his team's efforts today.
"Event by event we started hitting all routines without major flaws," Ronayne observed. "We did the little things today and to finally add a meet where we hit 24 of 24 routines helps us get the monkey off our back. Now we can just focus on stuff that will get us to be championship caliber."
FLOOR EXERCISE
Iowa State scored a 49.175 for the second meet in a row. Briana Ledesma had a great routine and put up a season-high score of 9.900. Haylee Young anchored Iowa State with a 9.850 and Ariana Orrego tied a career high with a 9.825. Meaghan Sievers, Molly Russ, and Kelsey Paz all recorded a 9.800. The 9.800 from Molly Russ marks a new career high for her. Natalia Ros Vaquer competed in an exhibition and tallied a 9.700.
Senior Briana Ledesma
"Today our mindset was to take advantage of the opportunity. I told myself, take advantage of this you don't get to do this much longer and just love competing floor. I am just so proud of this team that we all came together today and it finally clicked for us. This isn't even our best and we showed everyone what we are capable of."
VAULT
Iowa State ended the afternoon on vault and notched a season high 49.150. Meaghan Sievers again totaled a 9.900 for the second time this weekend. Haylee Young added a 9.850 to the Cyclone season high today. Sophia Steinmeyer scored another 9.825 and did an awesome just competing after coming back from injury. Kelly Martin scored a career high 9.800 to give the Cyclones a great start on vault. Kelsey Paz added a 9.775 and Ariana Orrego scored a 9.650 for the Cyclones.
Head Coach Jay Ronayne
"I thought we were excellent on vault today. I really liked the way the team approached it. They were very confident and attacked each vault. They didn't overthink vault like they have in the past. Knowing they were scoring extremely well, they were still attacking and avoided of getting into defense mode."
BALANCE BEAM
Beam was friendly to Iowa State as they tallied a 49.125. Haylee Young scored a 9.900 and matched her score from Friday's quad meet. Molly Russ had another impressive performance with a score a 9.850. Kelsey Paz one of the leaders for Iowa State on beam notched a 9.825. Airana Orrego and Casandra Diaz earned 9.775's. Meaghan Sievers also competed and scored 9.700. Emily White was an exhibitionist for Iowa State and scored a 9.600.
Senior Haylee Young
"I thought I had two solid routine this weekend. I was happy I could do that for my team. I am so happy for the team. We have been working so hard and we have so much heart. To finally put it together and be able to be proud of ourselves and not walk away a little frustrated is really great."
UNEVEN BARS
Iowa State started the afternoon with a 49.000 on bars. Hilary Green and Meaghan Sievers led the way for Iowa State with a pair of 9.825's. Haylee Young recorded another 9.800 which was the second one this weekend. Briana Ledesma and Laura Burns added 9.775s to the effort and Paz recorded a 9.725.
Junior Meaghan Sievers
"Coming into warmups we started on bars and we just into the swing of things, literally. We really just had good vibes the whole time and crushed it in practice and it carried over into the meet."
All-Around
Iowa State was back to having three all-around competitors. Haylee Young scored an impressive 39.400. Meaghan Sievers tallied a 39.225 and Kelsey Paz made it back to competing as an all-arounder and scored a 39.125
Up Next
Iowa State will compete at in the Masters Classic at Nebraska next Sunday, March 4. The competition will begin at 1 p.m. at the Devaney Center in Lincoln.
