DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Iowa State tennis team (5-1, 0-0 Big 12) defeated the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats, 4-0, and the Embry-Riddle Eagles, 4-3, Thursday.
In the first match, doubles duo Maty Cancini and Regina Espindola took away a 6-3 win over Matea Roki and Rehanna Butt at the No. 1 position. Playing at the No. 2 spot was juniors Erin Freeman and Annabella Bonadonna, who secured a 6-4 victory against Wildcats Alejandra Vidal and Karen Romero. Ekaterina Repina and Margarita Timakova won by forfeit at the No. 3 position.
In singles action, Maty Cancini won 6-3, 6-3 over Roki in the No. 1 spot. Bonadonna played at the No. 4 singles position and picked up a win against Karen Romero, finishing 6-1, 6-3. Both the No. 2, 3 and 5 positions went unfinished. Espindola faced Butt at the No. 2 position, with a score of 6-2, 2-6, 2-0, unfinished. At the No. 3 spot, Ekaterina Repina faced Vidal, going 5-7, 1-3, unfinished. Karen Alvarez, who played at the No. 5 singles spot, posted a 4-6, 1-4, unfinished score against Phatismo Ruele. Liera Bender won her singles match by forfeit.
In the afternoon, the Cyclones headed to the Crotty Tennis Complex to face the Eagles of Embry-Riddle, where ISU went unbeaten in doubles action.
No. 1 double partners Maty Cancini and Regina Espindola won their match against partners Roberta Krvajica and Georgina Wood, 6-4. Meanwhile, Ekaterina Repina and Margarita Timakova captured a 7-5 victory versus Maria Turillo and Kathryn Bock. At the No. 3 doubles position, juniors Erin Freeman and Annabella Bonadonna ended their match with a 6-0 win over Eagles Sabrina Ehrenfort and Lydia Carter.
The Cyclones also had an impressive showing in singles play. At the No. 1 singles spot, Cancini defeated Maria Turrillo, 6-4, 6-1. Espindola fell in her match to Roberta Krvajica, 5-7, 3-6, as the No. 2 singles player. Repina, who played at the No. 3 position, captured a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Georgina Wood, while Bonadonna secured a 6-1, 6-0 win over Kathryn Bock. Sabrina Ehrenfort, Freeman's foe at the No. 4 spot, won by default, 6-7, 1-2, and Liera Bender fell in her singles match, 3-6 (ret).
ISU will conclude its trip to Florida this Saturday as it meets with Stetson at 9 a.m.
