AMES, Iowa – Iowa State's Haylee Young claimed her second career Big 12 event title Saturday at the 2018 Big 12 Gymnastics Championship inside Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclone senior picked up the floor exercise title as a part of a tie for the top spot with a 9.900.
Young's efforts helped ISU finish third with a 195.650. No. 1 Oklahoma claimed its seventh-straight league title with a 197.775, No. 13 Denver took second with a 197.075, and the Cyclones edged out No. 25 West Virginia, who posted a 196.625.
"We keep telling Haylee that she needs to deliver, and she did so on multiple occasions today," Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne explained. "That is exactly what we have been asking for from her."
Iowa State will now prepare for the NCAA Gymnastics Regionals on Saturday, April 7. The team will find out where it will be headed on Monday. Ronayne said he wants great focus from the gymnasts during the upcoming week and a half of practice.
"We're going to be focused on clean gymnastics and that's what we need to do to score as high as possible," Ronayne said. "In the end we need to focus on us, and do our job."
Floor Exercise
Iowa State notched a team score of a 49.125 tonight. ISU has had a great run of floor performances in their past meets. Haylee Young got her Big 12 floor title as the latest accomplishment in her great Iowa State career with a 9.900. Young became the first Cyclone to earn a Big 12 floor exercise title since Kacey Oiness in 2006 and is ISU's sixth Big 12 floor champion.
Kelsey Paz had another strong routine with a 9.850. Briana Ledesma has a final score of 9.825. Meaghan Sievers and Ariana Orrego tallied a pair of 9.775s and Molly Russ opened with a 9.750.

"It was a huge accomplishment to win floor against so many talented athletes. My teammates were just amazing. They always have my back, and go out there with all of our heart. I think we left out heart out there today. "
Vault
Iowa State recorded a 49.075 on vault tonight. This is the second-highest score for the Cyclones on vault this season. Sophia Steinmeyer tallied a 9.850 which is her career high. Meaghan Sievers also added a 9.850 on her routine. Kelly Martin tied her career high matching the 9.800 she recorded at Lindenwood on Feb 25. Haylee Young closed with a 9.800 and both Kelsey Paz and Briana Ledesma added 9.775s.
Head Coach Jay Ronayne
"They were fairly clean vaults with some good landings which is what we've really working on. Their actions in the gym have been promising and I was very pleased with how that whole rotation went."
Balance Beam
Iowa State started the Big 12 Championship on beam and recorded a 48.775. Meaghan Sievers and Kelsey Paz led the way for Iowa State with a pair of 9.775s. Ariana Orrego and Molly Russ scored a 9.750. The Cyclones also added a solid routine from Sophia Steinmeyer with a 9.725.
Uneven Bars
Iowa State ended the evening with a 48.675 due to two falls to open the event. Haylee Young tied her career high with a 9.875. Meaghan Sievers also added a 9.875 which is the fourth time she has done so this season. Kelsey Paz has had an impressive routine and scored a 9.850. Hilary Green ended with a 9.800 to end Iowa State's effort tonight.

"I definitely built confidence up when I came in on Senior Night and hit that routine. Nilson (Medeiros Savage) has been very good with reminding me to relax and let it happen. I felt calm when I go on bars now and all of the girls make calm and let me know I can do it."
All-Around
Iowa State had three all-around gymnasts in their lineup tonight. Meaghan Sievers tallied a 39.275, placing fourth in the competition. Kelsey Paz added a 39.250 and Haylee Young wasn't too far behind with a 39.125.

The Cyclones will wait to find out where they are headed for the NCAA Regionals starting on April 7. The selection show will be on Monday at 3 p.m., and streamed on NCAA.com.
