DALLAS, Texas – The No. 23 Iowa State women's golf team placed fourth at the 2018 Big 12 Championship, but the story of the day was scripted by Cyclone senior Celia Barquin Arozamena.
Playing in her final Big 12 Championship, Barquin Arozamena fired a final-round 69 to win the medalist race by three shots over Emilee Hoffman of Texas with a 54-hole tally of 213 (73-71-69).
She became just the second Cyclone in school history to win medalist honors at a conference tournament (Shelley Finnestad, 1993 Big Eight Championship).
Barquin Arozamena, who picked up her 16th top-10 finish of her career to tie for second in school history, entered the final round three strokes behind 36-hole leader Hoffman. After shaking off a bogey on the first hole, Barquin Arozamena carded back-to-back birdies on holes No. 2 and 3. She went 2-under the rest of the way to win her first career tournament title and make Cyclone history.
"I missed a couple of fairways, but I always felt I made the smart choice all day," Barquin Arozamena commented about her round. "It was one of those days where I made a bunch of long putts. After I bogeyed the first hole, I was able to hit a four-wood on my second shot to two-feet on No. 2. I got my tap-in birdie and it gave me a lot of momentum."
Barquin Arozamena has now fulfilled her goal of winning a tournament title as a Cyclone.
"I always wanted to win a tournament for Iowa State," Barquin Arozamena said. "To get my first title at the Big 12 Championship is just awesome."
As a team, the Cyclones were just one stroke from tying for second at 889 after posting a final-round 295. Texas won the team title at 880.
Cyclone rookie Alanna Campbell narrowly missed out on making the Big 12 All-Tournament Team by tying for 11th at 223. Campbell carded a final-round 75 this afternoon, rallying with birdies on No. 16 and 18.
Senior Nattapan Siritrai posted a final-round 73 to jump into a tie for 22nd at 228.
The Cyclones, who are a virtual lock to make their ninth-straight NCAA Regional, will learn which Regional they will participate in Wednesday night.
