AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (1-0) opened its 2018 campaign with a 2-0 victory over South Dakota State (0-1) on Friday night at the Cyclone Sports Complex. Courtney Powell and Emily Steil both notched goals to send the Cyclones past the defending Summit League champion Jackrabbits.
Turning Point of the Game
The Cyclone offensive attack was consistently strong throughout the evening, but Powell's break-through goal in the 32nd minute what just what Iowa State needed after playing SDSU to a frustrating 0-0 draw in Brookings, S.D. a season ago. Hannah Cade played a ball into the box, finding the head of Kassi Ginther, who glanced the ball forward to find Powell, a fellow sophomore, who capitalized against the helpless South Dakota State keeper.

The back line. Powell and Steil provided the highlights, but Iowa State's defensive back line put in an outstanding effort in the shutout victory. Jordan Enga and Marin Daniel were particularly impressive at their center back positions, each playing the full 90 minutes. McKenna Schultz, Merin Mundt and Shea Sullivan all played significant minutes at the outside back positions. The Cyclones refused to give SDSU any clean looks, allowing just five shots on goal that were easily cleaned up by sophomore goalkeeper Dayja Schwichtenberg.
Coach Speak
"I think defensively, we were very organized and never gave up a real good, quality chance," said head coach Tony Minatta. "They had some corner kicks, but I thought we were very organized. Taking care of the ball, we did a much better job of that, but still had some mishaps that caused problems for us, especially at the end. Marin Daniel and Jordan Enga are playing like next-level players. You could see it tonight. They work well as a tandem and it's fun to watch them play."
