AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (1-1) dropped a double overtime heartbreaker on Sunday to Missouri (1-0-1) at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The Cyclone rallied from a 1-0 deficit with an equalizing goal in the 80th minute by Kasey Opfer to send the game to overtime. Iowa State looked to have the momentum on their side until disaster struck in the second overtime period, as the Tigers won on an own goal in the 104th minute of the match, ending the contest.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes to...
Kasey Opfer. The junior midfielder was her typical hard-nosed self on the pitch Sunday afternoon, and she provided some of Iowa State's best opportunities. Opfer battled time and again to win loose balls and headers in the box, leading the team with four shot attempts, including the highlight of the match. With Iowa State trailing and just over 10 minutes left on the clock, fellow junior Hannah Cade struck a well-placed free kick into the 18-yard box, and Opfer fought to win it, sending the ball past the MU keeper for a game-tying goal.
Coach Speak
"It was great to see the team come back from being down 1-0," head coach Tony Minatta said. "We fought to come back and tie the game. In the first overtime we had some great chances at goal and really some good opportunities to finish it out and came up short a couple times. It's unfortunate to go out the way we did, looking to clear the ball and it glances off a foot and those things happen in soccer. To have this kind of a test this early in the season prepares us for the season and the Big 12 Conference."
On Deck
Iowa State will travel to West Lafayette, Ind. to battle a pair of Big Ten opponents. The Cyclones play defending co-Big Ten champion Northwestern on Friday at 3 p.m., followed by a match against host Purdue on Sunday at 2 p.m.
