AMES, Iowa – Iowa State put on a strong performance in its exhibition match on Friday, taking down South Dakota 3-1 (25-17, 22-52, 25-17, 25-13) at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones were led by a strong performance from senior Grace Lazard, who had 14 kills at a .429 hitting percentage.
Lazard's fellow senior Jess Schaben had eight kills and eight digs, while Hannah Bailey had seven kills at a .600 hitting percentage. In the back row, Hali Hillegas had 13 digs, and Izzy Enna posted 12.
Set One: Iowa State 25 South Dakota 17
A tight first set broke into the Cyclones' favor when the home team went on a 12-2 run, making a 7-7 match a 19-9 one, with freshman Eleanor Holthaus and sophomore Avery Rhodes both contributing heavily in attack. ISU hit .321 in the set, as Grace Lazard put down a kill to give ISU the first 25-17.

Set Two: South Dakota 25 Iowa State 22
The Cyclones were put in a hole early and struggled to get out. Despite a strong offensive output by Lazard, who had five kills in the set, ISU could not overcome the Coyotes. USD was up six at 23-17, with ISU closing the gap to two at 23-21, but the visitors closed it out with a kill from Hayley Dotseth to take the frame 25-22.

Set Three: Iowa State 25 South Dakota 17
South Dakota snuck ahead early, and was able to get some breathing room at 12-8 USD. The Cyclones came out of the timeout strong, with Taylor Baranski serving the home squad within one at 12-11. Hannah Bailey's trip behind the service line put ISU in control, with a 3-0 run making a 14-12 disadvantage a 16-14 lead the Cyclones would not look back. Bailey got her fifth kill of the set to wrap it up at 25-17.

Set Four: Iowa State 25 South Dakota 13
The Cyclone middles dominated the final set. Lazard got five kills on seven swings, while Meegan Hard had three on six to power ISU to a .517 hitting percentage for the frame. In a defensive specialist role, Hillegas had eight digs in the frame to keep USD to eight kills at a .091 hitting clip for the frame. Iowa State secured the match when Hart and Josie Herbst teamed up to deny Madison Jurgens at 25-13 ISU.

Player of the Match
Grace Lazard. The senior middle picked up where she left off last season, notching a match-high 14 kills at a .429 hitting percentage. She also contributed two blocks and dig in the ISU win.
