CYCLONE NOTEBOOK
1. The Iowa State Soccer team (2-5-1) is set to travel to UMKC (6-2) for a Friday night match at Durwood Stadium before returning home to battle in-state foe UNI (2-3-2) on Sunday at the Cyclone Sports Complex at 2 p.m. This weekend marks the final non-conference matches of the season for the Cyclones. Sunday's match vs. UNI will be broadcast live by Cyclones.tv.
2. The Cyclones took down previously unbeaten Iowa last Friday, notching the first win of the 2018-19 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series for the Cardinal & Gold. The win snapped a three-game skid for Iowa State in the series, as head coach Tony Minatta improved to 2-3 all-time vs. the Hawkeyes.
3. A fast start in front of a raucous crowd at the Cyclone Sports Complex propelled ISU past Iowa. Kasey Opfer helped the Cyclones strike first, converting a header in the 7th minute off a corner kick by Emily Steil, giving Iowa State a 1-0 lead. Freshman Taylor Bee scored the first goal of her career in the 35th minute, heading in a goal off an assist from Hannah Cade. Iowa countered, making it 2-1 with a goal in the first minute of the second half, but the Cyclones held on to win, 2-1.
4. Cyclone fans showed up in full force to support Iowa State in the Cy-Hawk rivalry battle. Friday night's crowd of 1,527Â was the third-largest in program history.
5. Iowa State was faced with yet another unbeaten foe on Sunday when Milwaukee (6-0) arrived at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The Panthers, who have not lost a regular season match since Sep. 28, 2016, kept their 30-game regular season unbeaten streak intact with a 3-2 overtime victory.
6. A pair of second-half goals sparked an ISU comeback late in regulation, but the Cyclones couldn't hold on. With MKE leading 1-0, Steil notched the equalizing header off an assist from Klasey Medelberg in the 72nd minute. Powell then put away the go-ahead goal, assisted by Cade, in the 78th minute. With just 1:18 remaining in regulation, Milwaukee sent the match to overtime with an 89th minute goal by McKaela Schmelzer. Jelena Sever (98') then scored the golden goal in overtime.
7. Midfielder Hannah Cade has come on strong of late for the Cyclones, facilitating the offense, and specializing with tremendous services into the box. The native of Lakeville, Minn., leads Iowa State with three assists, including two in the last two matches.
8. Emily Steil is enjoying the best season of her career as a senior. Steil, not known as a prominent goal-scorer, leads Iowa State with six points on the year, and is tied for the team lead with two goals. Steil and her midfield parter Kasey Opfer, who also has two goals, have proved to be dangerous in the air, consistently winning headers on set pieces for the Cyclones.
SERIES vs. UMKC
Friday's match at Durwood Stadium will be just the second contest between the two squads in program history. The Cyclones and 'Roos met last season on Sep. 3, 2017 at the Cyclone Sports Complex in their first-ever meeting on the pitch, with Iowa State winning, 2-0.
Last year's match in Ames remained a scoreless tie until late into the second half, when Courtney Powell broke through, giving Iowa State the lead in the 73rd minute. Brooke Tasker played a ball into the box, finding Powell. The native of La Porte City, Iowa, collected and spun to protect the ball, before finding an opening on the right side of the goal, pushing it through to give the Cyclones a 1-0 lead.
Steil put the finishing touches on the Cyclone victory with a goal in the 76th minute, assisted by Hannah Cade.
SERIES vs. UNI
Iowa State has dominated the all-time series vs. in-state foe UNI, boasting an 11-0 record when meeting the Panthers. The series dates back to Sep. 2, 2001, a 1-0 Cyclone victory in Ames, Iowa. UNI is the only team Iowa State has met 10 or more times on the pitch without a loss.
The Iowa State and UNI soccer programs last met on Oct. 23, 2016, a 1-0 Cyclone victory in Cedar Falls. Current Cyclone forward Klasey Medelberg, a sophomore at the time, scored her first goal of the season in the 68th minute, an unassisted strike to lift ISU past the Panthers.
