KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Iowa State soccer team (2-6-1) fell 3-1 to UMKC (7-2) on Friday night at Durwood Soccer Stadium. Junior Merin Mundt scored her first goal of the season in the 32nd minute off an assist from Emily Steil, but the Roos responded just moments later, and the Cyclones were unable to answer.
Turning Point of the Game
UMKC's second goal of the night, a header by defender Abby Small off a Roo corner, proved to be the game-winner and a critical shift in momentum. The Cyclones had just equalized to make the score 1-1 on Mundt's goal, when Reighan Childers took the corner only 70 seconds later. Childers' service found its mark, and Small put UMKC ahead, 2-1.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes to...
Merin Mundt. The junior provided a much-needed spark off the bench for the Cyclones. Mundt, who has recently made the most of her move from outside back to a forward position, was set up by Steil. The ball forward found Mundt in stride and the native of Burlington, Wis., was able to sneak her shot past the Roo goalkeeper to tie the match at 1-1. Mundt finished the match with team-highs of three shots, including two shots on goal, in 45 minutes of action.
On Deck
Iowa State returns home for its final non-conference match of the season on Sunday. The Cyclones will face in-state foe UNI at 2 p.m. at the Cyclone Sports Complex, in a match set to be broadcast by Cyclones.tv.
