AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State soccer team (2-7-1) fell 1-0 to UNI (4-3-2) on Sunday at the Cyclone Sports Complex in ISU's final non-conference match of the regular season. UNI's Jordyn Rolli notched the lone goal of the match in the 48th minute to send the Panthers past the Cyclones.
Turning Point of the Game
Following a scoreless opening half, Rolli shook free inside the box in the 48th minute. The junior forward unleashed a shot that was blocked by a Cyclone defender at the end line, and collected her own rebound, capitalizing from point-blank range. The Cyclones would continue to press offensively looking for an equalizer, out-shooting UNI 16-10 in the match, but were unable to break through.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes to...
Brooke Miller. The freshman from San Marcos, Calif., made the first start of her career on Friday, getting the nod at outside back. Miller performed commendably, logging a career-high 75 minutes of action while holding up well on the right side of the Cyclone defense. Miller's emergence has given Iowa State much-needed depth at the outside back position, and allowed head coach Tony Minatta to re-configure his lineup as the season has progressed.
Coach Speak
"It was tough," Minatta said. "We worked hard to try to get back into the game. Mentally we gave a decent effort, but it just wasn't enough today to get the goal we needed. The good news is we start over again on Tuesday. We're going to have to really focus on our defensive tactics, our shape and our movement defensively. We'll need to be tougher to break down, especially in the Big 12 against those teams. We have athletes that can compete, and we need to give them a fresh start and turn it around."
On Deck
Iowa State is set to begin Big 12 play next weekend on a road swing through Texas. The Cyclones will battle TCU on Friday at 6 p.m. in Fort Worth. Iowa State will then face Texas Tech on Sunday at 12 p.m. in Lubbock.
