FORT WORTH, Texas – The Iowa State soccer team (2-7-2) opened Big 12 play with a 2-2 draw against TCU (7-1-2) on Friday afternoon at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium. Klasey Medelberg (5') and Kassi Ginther (57') both scored goals in the double-overtime thriller, allowing the Cyclones to earn a valuable point on the road in conference play.
Emily Steil tallied two assists on the day, the second multi-assist game of her career. The senior now has 11 assists as a Cyclone, tied for seventh-most in program history.
Turning Point of the Game
With the match knotted at 1-1, Steil played a beautiful ball into the box on a corner kick in the 57th minute. The ball found junior Merin Mundt, who tapped it to Ginther, who freed herself at the far post. Ginther, a sophomore, buried the chance for the first goal of her career. It gave Iowa State a 2-1 lead and was critical in helping the Cyclones send the match to overtime and weather a late TCU offensive push.
Medelberg provided the other big highlight of the match. Steil played a long ball forward and found her speedy fellow senior in stride. Medelberg took advantage of the one-on-on situation, placing her shot past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net in the fifth minute of the match. Both Steil and Mundt were credited with assists on the play.
Game Ball Goes to...
Celia Barquin Arozamena. Prior to the match, the Cyclones named Barquin Arozamena an honorary team captain for the remainder of season and dedicated the match to her memory. The former ISU women's golfer, 2018 Big 12 women's golf champion and Iowa State Female Athlete of the Year, tragically passed away on Monday. The Cyclones all wore black captain's sleeves and "CBA" patches on their jerseys to honor the fallen Cyclone and the legacy she leaves behind.
Coach Speak
"TCU is No. 9 in the RPI and only have one loss on the year, so this is a good result for us," Minatta said. "To get points on the road in the Big 12, those come at a premium. Last year, it came down to just a few points, so one point on the road is big for us. We showed a lot of grit. We've gone through a lot of adversity this past week. To come in today and give that kind of effort and show that grit at the end. We didn't stop fighting, so I'm just proud of the team right now. They definitely honored Celia today with their play."
