CYCLONE NOTEBOOK
1. The Iowa State Soccer team (2-7-1) opens Big 12 play this weekend with a pair of road matches. The Cyclones first travel to TCU (7-1-1) to battle the Horned Frogs on Friday at 6 p.m. at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium. ISU will then travel west to take on No. 22 Texas Tech (8-1-0) on Sunday at noon in Lubbock. Both games will be broadcast live by FSSW+.
2. The Cyclones will look to bounce back after an 0-2 weekend that wrapped up non-conference play. Iowa State fell 3-1 at UMKC before a 1-0 loss at home to UNI on Sunday.
3. Merin Mundt has emerged as an option in the attacking third for the Cyclones over the past several weeks. Head coach Tony Minatta has moved Mundt, who had primarily been an outside back over the past two years, to forward and the transition has paid dividends. The junior took a career-high three shots and scored the second goal of her career vs. UMKC.
4. Mundt's goal vs. the Roos was a 32nd minute equalizer that came off a beautiful ball played forward by midfielder Emily Steil. It was Steil's third assist of the season, tied for the team lead. Steil, now with nine career assists, is one shy of joining the program's all-time top 10. Her nine assists are the most by an active Cyclone since 2013 (Emily Goldstein - 14).
5. Steil is enjoying the best season of her career as a senior. Not usually known as a prominent goal-scorer, Steil leads Iowa State with seven points on the year, and is tied for the team lead with two goals. Steil and her midfield parter Kasey Opfer, who also has two goals, have proved to be dangerous in the air, consistently winning headers on set pieces for the Cyclones.
6. ISU center back Marin Daniel earned all-tournament team honors at the Boilermaker Challenge Cup after an outstanding weekend. Daniel played all 180 minutes for the Cyclones at the tournament and was a menace to opposing offenses, consistently turning away scoring opportunities for Purdue and Northwestern.
7. Daniel and Enga have been a tremendous duo on the back line so far this season for the Cyclones. Both have played all 941 available minutes this season, and have drawn rave reviews from Minatta and staff for anchoring the Iowa State defensive effort.
SERIES vs. TCU
Friday's match at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium will be the eighth contest between the two squads in program history. The Horned Frogs lead the all-time series with the Cyclones, 4-2-1, dating back to their first meeting on Sep. 27, 1998. The two programs first match as Big 12 foes came on Oct. 5, 2012 in the Horned Frogs inaugural season in the conference.
Iowa State and TCU met last season on Oct. 19, 2017 at the Cyclone Sports Complex in a 1-0 overtime victory for the Horned Frogs. Yasmeen Oliver buried a shot in the corner of the goal from well beyond the 18-yard box in the 98th minute to secure a TCU win.
The Cyclones' last win over TCU came on Oct. 31, 2014, when Tony Minatta's Cyclones came away with a 1-0 senior day victory to wrap up the regular season. Adalie Schmidt scored a goal in the 89th minute to secure the win for ISU in a thriller.
SERIES vs. TEXAS TECH
Iowa State owns a slight lead in the all-time series with Texas Tech with a record of 11-10-1 vs. the Red Raiders. The first meeting in the series came on Oct. 25, 1996, a 4-0 Red Raider win in the inaugural season of Iowa State's soccer program.
Last year's match vs. TTU on Oct. 22, 2017 at the Cyclone Sports Complex ended in a 1-1 draw, eliminating Iowa State from a chance to advance to the 2017 Big 12 Soccer Championship. Hannah Cade scored her first goal of the season in the 86th minute to breath new life into the Cyclones and send the match to overtime, but a golden goal was not to be, despite a 6-3 shot advantage in overtime for ISU.
