CANCUN, Mexico - The Iowa State gymnastics team battled its way to a second place finish at the 2019 Cancun Classic to kickoff the gymnastics season. The Cyclones placed second with a score of 194.275, defeating West Virginia (194.150) and Rutgers (189.750) while falling to No. 9 Michigan (196.050).
Iowa State started the meet in first place after two quality floor and vault rotations. The Cyclones had to count a fall on each beam and bars, which affected their score and put them in second.
"I like the way we started the meet," Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne said. "We have been really focused on floor, and knowing that this could possibly be our weakest event. Being able to start on that event and have a solid start we felt like we were in the game.
"We just had a couple of fluke mistakes and can work on those," Ronayne continued. "We now have a great base to build on right now and get better and better through the season."

The Cyclones tallied 48.975 on vault in the second rotation of the night. Sophia Steinmeyer tied a career high for ISU with a 9.850.
