Iowa State had a bye over the weekend, meaning the Cyclones will be taking the court for the first time in a week when they take on Kansas on Wednesday. ISU fell in four sets to No. 6 Texas last Wednesday, bouncing back from a rough first set to take the second and even the match. However, ISU was unable to convert early leads into set victories in three and four, allowing the Longhorns to pull away. Josie Herbst led the attack with a season-high 15 kills, while Avery Rhodes got her 10 kills at .467 hitting. Starting for the injured Piper Mauck, Jenna Brandt recorded 41 assists and eight digs.
The Kansas Jayhawks come into Wednesday's match with a 4-7 overall record, 0-1 in Big 12 play. KU opened conference play on Saturday with a loss at home to then-No. 2 Baylor in three sets. the KU offense struggled to get rolling, hitting just .055 to Baylor's .386. The Jayhawks were led by eight kills from Ashley Smith.
The Kansas attack is led by middle blocker Zoe Hill, who averaged 2.41 kills per set. Hill and fellow middle Rachel Langs are a strong blocking combo, with Hill at 1.00 blocks per set and Langs leading KU with 1.22 blocks per frame. Kansas is averaging 2.65 blocks per set on the year.
Iowa State has played Kansas more than any other team in program history, with Wednesday marking the 95th all-time meeting. ISU leads the all-time series 50-43-1, having won the last three encounters which included a pair of sweeps in 2019. Should ISU get the win on Wednesday, it will mark the first time the Cyclones have four-straight wins over the Jayhawks since 2005-07 when the Cyclones got six-straight.
