ISU Honors September Student-Athletes Of The Month

AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State Office of Student-Athlete Development announced that four Cyclone student-athletes have been honored for their hard work and dedication in the classroom during the month of September. Iowa State's Student-Athletes of the Month are Alex Aaberg (swimming & diving), Re-al Mitchell (football), Michal Schuler (volleyball) and Datrone Young (football).
Alex Aaberg – Redshirt Senior (Swimming & Diving)
Hometown:Â Coralville, Iowa
Major:Â Biology
Alex Aaberg and the Iowa State swimming & diving team are set to open the 2019-20 campaign at Nebraska on Oct. 19. Aaberg is looking to build on a strong junior campaign, setting new personal bests last season on the springboards against UNI, with scores of 230.05 (one-meter) and 235.10 (three-meter). Aaber was also a First Team Academic All-Big 12 selection in 2018-19.
Re-al Mitchell – Redshirt Freshman (Football)
Hometown:Â Eastvale, Calif.
Major:Â Psychology
Re-al Mitchell has emerged as a weapon for Matt Campbell's offense early in the 2019 season. Mitchell has appeared in three games, rushing nine times for 92 yards and one rushing touchdown. He also tallied the first passing touchdown of his career vs. ULM.
Michal Schuler – Freshman (Volleyball)
Hometown:Â Oregon, Ill.
Major:Â Open Option
Michal Schuler has been tremendous at the libero position as a freshman. Schuler leads the Cyclones with 15 service aces on the year, and has tallied 166 digs, good for 2.72 digs per set. She's helped lead Iowa State to an 11-6 start to the season.
Datrone Young – Redshirt Sophomore (Football)
Hometown:Â Delray Beach, Fla.
Major:Â Liberal Studies
Datrone Young's steady play at cornerback has been a catalyst to Iowa State's strong defense through six games this season.  Young, a liberal studies major, has tallied 12 tackles, including one tackle for loss, and one pass break-up while appearing in six games.
Student-athlete development staff members who oversee each sport submit nominations, and the staff votes on the monthly winner.
