AMES, Iowa – Six members of the Iowa State volleyball team were named to the 2019 Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball Team, the conference office announced Thursday. Five Cyclones earned Academic All-Big 12 First Team in Brooke Andersen, Taylor Baranski, Jenna Brandt, Izzy Enna and Piper Mauck. Eleanor Holthaus earned Academic All-Big 12 Second Team honors.
Andersen, a sophomore from Waukesha, Wisconsin was one of seven Big 12 student-athletes to be nominated with a 4.0 GPA. A Supply Chain Management major, Andersen has 90 digs at 1.84 per set and 42 kills on the season for the Cyclones and is a first time Academic All-Big 12 First Team nominee.
Enna and Mauck are on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team for a second-straight season. Mauck, a Community & Regional Planning and Environmental Studies major, is second in the Big 12 with 10.41 assists per set. She has 10 double-doubles on the season and is second on ISU with her 24 aces. Enna, an Apparel Merchandise Design major, leads ISU with her 297 digs at 3.13 per set and is third on ISU with 21 aces in 2019.
Baranski and Brandt, both sophomores, are first-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team honorees. Barasnki has 32 digs on the year at 1.39 per set. Brandt has made three starts at setter on the year for ISU, recording 80 assists in that time.
Holthaus, a Communications Studies major, has been the Cyclones' go-to hitter. The Richmond, Minnesota native leads Iowa State with 3.24 kills per set at .255 hitting. She has five double-doubles on the season and is third on the Cyclones in blocking with 0.85 stuffs per set.
To qualify for Academic All-Big 12, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
Iowa State returns to the court on Wednesday when the Cyclones travel to Lawrence to take on Kansas. First serve between ISU and KU will be at 6:30 p.m.
