AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (3-3) came up short against Iowa (5-1, 3-1 Big Ten) 179-121. Through three lead changes and four event wins, the Cyclones ultimately lost by a margin of 58 points.
Iowa State got off to a hot start by extending the 200 medley relay win streak to five, leaving the Cyclones unbeaten in the event in dual meets. Emily Haan, Martha Haas, Wyli Erlechman and Anna Andersen captured the win with a season-best time of 1:41.67.
Nolwenn Nunes beat out competitors in the 1000 free to keep Iowa State on top. Nunes finish of 10:03.15 brought the overall score to 24-12.
The Hawkeyes followed the first two events by taking the lead with first-place finishes in the 200 free and 100 back. Lehr Thorson battled back to bring the score in favor of the Cyclones with her 1:01.93 finish in the 100 breast. Thorson went on to out-touch opponents for the second time of the night in the 200 breast with her time of 2:18.04.
The lead-change trend continued as Iowa captured additional event wins, including a new pool record set by Iowa's Kelsey Drake (1:57.87) in the 200 fly.
Thorson's finish in the 100 breast broke her previous personal record she set last year against the Hawkeyes. Lucia Rizzo also set two new personal bests in the 100 (55.48) and 200 fly (2:02.08) with her second-place finishes.
In three-meter diving, three Cyclones posted three Zone cuts as Dana Liva (299.10), Jayna Misra (288.90) and Michelle Schlossmacher Smith (285.50) grabbed third, fourth and fifth place. The finishes secure both Misra and Liva's second and Schlossmacher Smith's first cut score on the three-meter.
Iowa State accumulated two additional Zone cuts in one-meter diving. Liva placed third with 279.45 and Schlossmacher Smith came in fourth with 269.00, bringing the season total to 15 Zone diving qualifying scores.
Iowa held on to their lead throughout the remainder of the dual. With all events taken into account, Iowa State accumulated seven season-best times.
"I thought our team really competed hard today," said head coach Duane Sorenson. "We had a lot of outstanding swims and a number of personal bests were turned in. Iowa is just a little bit stronger on the last length and the number of races. I thought we really took them on and raced the hardest we could today. We've got things to work on but it was a good way to end the first semester."
