AMES, Iowa – Iowa State's Kate Mitchell and Carlotta Gazzola have earned Big 12 weekly awards following their standout performances in the Cyclones' road sweep over South Dakota State and South Dakota, as Mitchell was named Big 12 Women's Diver of the Week and Gazzola claimed Big 12 Women's Newcomer of the Week.
Mitchell, a Frankfort, Ill. native, picked up three individual event wins over the weekend, sweeping the diving events against South Dakota, with scores of 274.80 in 1 meter diving and 281.70 in 3 meter diving. She also added a runner-up finish in the 1 meter at South Dakota State while claiming first place on the 3 meter boards, highlighted by a weekend-best score of 295.50 in Brookings.
Gazzola, competing in her first collegiate road meets, was dominant in the distance events, earning four individual victories across the weekend. The Milan, Italy native set a pool record at South Dakota State in the 1650 freestyle with a personal-best time of 17:24.79, breaking the previous time by 3.5 seconds. She also swept the 500 and 1000 freestyle events against both opponents, going a perfect 4-for-4 in her individual races.
The efforts of Mitchell and Gazzola helped Iowa State capture two road wins, continuing the team's strong start to the 2025-26 season.
