MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Iowa State (20-10, 9-8 Big 12) fell 90-75 at West Virginia (12-18, 4-13) on Wednesday night at WVU Coliseum.
The Cyclones had four players in double figures, led by 17 from sophomore guard Lindell Wigginton, but were unable to recover from a 19-2 Mountaineer run midway through the first half.
How It Happened
Seven different Cyclones scored in the game's first nine minutes, as Iowa State held a 20-18 advantage with 11:39 to play in the first half on a Terrence Lewis layup. However, the Mountaineers proceeded to catch fire from the field, going on a 19-2 run that changed the tenor of the game. West Virginia knocked down three 3-pointers during the decisive run, and made 8-of-18 from beyond the arc in the first half.
In total, the Mountaineers shot 57.5 percent (23-of-40) from the field in the opening 20 minutes. Jermaine Haley led the way with 20 points, making nine of his 11 field goal attempts. The Cyclones were led by seven first-half points by Lewis off the bench. Iowa State had difficulty taking care of the ball in the first stanza, as the Mountaineers scored 14 points off nine Cyclone turnovers. West Virginia led 54-33 at halftime.
Iowa State refused to go away, putting together an improved performance in the second half. A 16-7 Cyclone run whittled WVU's lead down to just 10 at 72-62 with 9:21 to play. Wigginton, who scored 14 of his 17 points in the second half, helped key the rally. However, West Virginia's Jordan McCabe helped stave off a Cyclone comeback, as the Mountaineer freshman knocked a triple in response for three of his 18 points on 5-of-6 shooting from deep. The Cyclones were never able to cut the deficit to single digits, as West Virginia went on to win, 90-75.
