AMES, Iowa – Iowa State wrapped up its 2019 exhibition season with a 2-0 victory over Drake on Saturday night at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The Cyclones got goals from junior captain Tavin Hays (4') and freshman Mira Emma (41') in the first half, while putting together their second shutout in as many exhibition contests this season.
In total, 22 different Cyclones saw at least 15 minutes of action on the pitch as head coach Tony Minatta continued to test his depth ahead of the 2019 campaign.
Turning Point of the Game
Hays came out and set the tone for Saturday's exhibition. The native of Las Vegas, Nev., found an opening in the Bulldog defense in the fourth minute and capitalized. Hays lined up a shot from just left of the top of the box, and buried the chance in the upper right 90. The goal brought the Cardinal & Gold crowd to its feet, and the Cyclones looked in control from that point through the final whistle.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes to...
Mira Emma. The freshmen scored her second goal in as many exhibition matches late in the first half, extending the Cyclone lead to 2-0. Emma's composure in the offensive attack stood out, particularly for a player yet to make her official collegiate debut. In the 41st minute, the native of Wheaton, Ill., sent an absolute rocket toward goal from well beyond the 18-yard box, burying the chance in the left side of the net. She nearly tallied another on a corner kick she bent on target before it was punched above frame by the Bulldog keeper at the last moment.
Coach Speak
"Tavin had a really nice goal and once that happened, we kind of settled in," said head coach Tony Minatta. "I thought we were very organized defensively and really battled hard to limit any opportunities they had going forward. There was a moment I think we had seven freshmen on the field at one time and we didn't miss a beat. We were able to throw a lot of combinations out there and it's exciting to see the growth. Keeping things in perspective, it's still preseason and we have a lot of work to do to get to where we want to go."
