LOS ANGELES – Iowa State (0-1) fell by a score of 3-0 to No. 4 UCLA (1-0) in its season-opener on Friday night at UCLA's Wallis Annenberg Stadium.
Turning Point of the Game
The Cyclones battled exceptionally well in the opening stanza, holding an offensive-minded Bruin squad at bay through the first 30 minutes thanks to an organized and spirited effort. However, the match swung in the 33rd minute when forward Ashley Sanchez received a pass just outside the 18-yard box. Sanchez danced and took a touch to her right before unleashing a shot into the back of the net to break the 0-0 tie.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes to...
Taylor Bee. The sophomore defender was one of three Cyclones to play all 90 minutes on Friday night in Westwood. The native of Fort Collins, Colo., was among the bright spots for head coach Tony Minatta's Cyclones, battling the Bruin front line and turning away multiple dangerous chances for the home team. Despite the final score, the Cyclone defensive organization was a positive moving forward.
Coach Speak
"We played a lot of young players tonight and a lot of freshmen," said head coach Tony Minatta. "I thought we stayed organized defensively, held them to only 10 shots going into the last 15 seconds. It's unfortunate that we kind of checked out at the end there. We need to follow through. As a whole, the team fought, we played hard and had some good moments going forward. It shows us the level that we're aspiring to get to at some point and we're not quite there yet, but I was proud of the effort we gave."
